Tsunami wins at the 2024 NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults!

Our latest publication, Tsunami by Ned Wenlock was nominated for two awards at this year’s New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults – and we were ecstatic to see Ned come away with a win for the NZSA Best First Book Award!

The award was presented by Mat Tait, last year’s Margaret Mahy Book of the Year winner for Te Wehenga: The Separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. Here is his speech on the category:

The Best First Book category is a measure of the creative health of children's literature in Aotearoa. The quality of this year's 25 eligible books, and the diverse range of voices, subjects, and approaches coming through, point to not only robustness, but vigour and growth. While doing the difficult job of deciding the shortlist of five, judges looked for work of a high technical quality that used that facility to bring something new, exciting, and vital to the form. The title of the category might misleadingly suggest that this is an award for potential, for showcasing talent in its raw, early stages. But while the names may be new, every one of the works gifted to us by our finalists is the result of a lifetime spent finding their voice and honing the skills needed to express it.

And his brief thoughts on Tsunami:

Tsunami displays a sophisticated understanding of the comics form, telling an often-disturbing story of a troubled and bullied boy with skill and a complexity that trusts readers to meet the book's challenges.

Here is the citation for Tsunami’s win:

As a graphic novel Tsunami is exemplary, with the language of comics intrinsic to its understanding and impact. The toy-like characters with their clean simple lines invite readers to identify with them, even as their diagrammatic performance of the story's central tragedy distances readers from them – thus seamlessly reflecting the book's themes of alienation and the need for connection. Tsunami respects the ability of its audience to handle ambiguity, to rise to meet its challenges and to find its rewards, however unsettling the journey may be. This is a book that lingers after the reading, and seems destined to be studied and discussed for a long time to come.

Ross Murray brings Rufus Marigold to ComicFest!

Recently Rufus Marigold creator Ross Murray was a guest at ComicFest, a comics festival held in Wellington on May 2nd – 4th, at the National Library. 

Held to coincide with Free Comic Book Day, a host of local comic guests descended on Wellington for the event including:  Katie O'Neill, Roger Langridge, Dylan Horrocks, Ant Sang, Sarah Laing, Jesse Barrett, Giselle Clarkson, Michel Mulipola, Jem Yoshioka, Paul Diamond, Alex Cara, and Sharon Murdoch! Free comics and a stall of local graphic novels were provided by Wellington's long-time premiere comic shop, GRAPHIC.

Murray took part in a panel discussion 'Stories from Aotearoa/New Zealand' with Jem Yoshioka, Paul Diamond (not pictured), Alex Cara and discussion chair Hannah Benbow. "I had so much fun at ComicFest in Wellington this past weekend," said Murray. 

"There were so many great workshops, presentations and panels which over 2,300 people attended in total. Well done to Monty Masseurs from Wellington City Libraries, Hannah Benbow from the National Library and everyone else who helped organise it. And thanks to GRAPHIC for feeding so many comics to the hungry masses and for hosting me at their store on Friday. Finally, a huge thank you to the National Library for inviting me to speak. You might not be able to tell from this photo but I even came close to enjoying myself."

Listen up: Ross Murray talks to RNZ Nine to Noon!

Mount Maunganui based illustrator Ross Murray has produced a graphic novel broaching the subject of social anxiety, a story he tells from his own tough experience. Rufus Marigold is Ross' first book, featuring a self-loathing nervous wreck of a man-monkey chimpanzee, who works in an office brimming with apparently socially competent people.  In comic form we see the eponymous hero of the book, Rufus Marigold continuously facing awkward social situations, enduring sleepless nights, battling with his negative interior voice and struggling with small talk.

Earth’s End Publishing is proud to announce our latest publishing endeavor - a collection of Ross Murray’s acclaimed webcomic, Rufus Marigold.

Initially released online in 2016, Rufus Marigold explores social anxiety disorder through the prism of its eponymous character and drew a devoted audience and praise for it’s equally humourous and at times heartbreaking insight into this much maligned subject.

After seeing the initial webcomic online, Earth’s End was quick to reach out to creator Ross Murray and work alongside him to develop this series into a unique and beautiful graphic novel. 

 

The print version of Rufus Marigold will collect all the original material and adds brand new additional vignettes, furthering and deepening the story of man-monkey Rufus and his attempts to define himself as something other than a complete and utter nervous wreck.

Ross Murray is known for his sharp art and vintage style illustrations. Recently his work has graced the covers and interiors of the Lonely Planet Epic series. In additional to his commercial work, Murray has also been making comics since 2014 when his Pets Talk Records strip appeared online. In 2015 Murray contributed to the Faction High Water anthology, edited and produced by Earth’s End co-founder Damon Keen. 2018 saw his humourous takes on Star Wars and Home & Away featured on the Vice website comics section. Rufus Marigold is Murray’s first full length graphic novel.

This weekend, Moa author James Davidson is speaking at Bookrapt's annual seminar for 2018 on Saturday, July 28th at the Tauranga Girls' College Library from 8:45am to 12noon.

Bookrapt is a group of writers, artists, schoolteachers, librarians, parents and grandparents with a passion for children's literature. Their speakers this year are James Davidson and Angie Belcher who you can enjoy along with a morning tea, raffles, book signings and a stall by local booksellers and experts in children's literature, Books A Plenty.

A cartoonist at heart, and an art teacher and deputy principal by day, James Davidson's love of comics started as a kid. When he is not working with young people, James is the creator behind the comic book Moa, which he draws and colours.

From the world of teaching and writing children’s books, to the recent writing and production of her first play, Angie Belcher has become focused on bringing books alive through role-play, readers theatre, and a chorus of voices. Her presentation at “Zap! Pow! Flash!” will focus on sharing these concepts, arming you with “super powers” for motivating readers.

Earth's End at Chromacon 2017 Report!

The Earth's End Publishing team were proud to launch James Davidson's Moa at the recent Chromacon Indie Arts Festival held earlier this month at the Aotea Centre in Auckland. Our authors were in attendance, with James Davidson signing copies of Moa and sketching up a storm - including a portrait of Chopstick, the hero of Ant Sang's The Dharma Punks - and Ant Sang signing, sketching and acting as team photographer!

It was great to see catch-up with so many great artists profiled at the event, and of coarse the art fans who make events like this so successful. A big thanks to everyone who came out and purchased a copy!

Earth's End at Chromacon 2017!

The Earth's End Publishing team will be featured guests at the Chromacon Arts Festival this weekend, April 8th -9th in Auckland! So what is Chromacon you ask? It is a FREE two day arts extravaganza, that celebrates the best homegrown independent creators of illustration, comics, 3D/scuplture, animation and videogames. This is your opportunity to meet these creators in person and support their work by buying directly from them: books, art prints and some much more!

Earth's End Publishing will be launching our collection of James Davidson's Moa at the event. So come down and get a signed copy from the artist himself, in Auckland for this festival only! Ant Sang will be joining us on the Saturday to sign and sketch in copies of his acclaimed graphic novel, The Dharma Punks. Editorial Director Adrian Kinnaird will also be at the booth all weekend signing copies of his seminal NZ comics anthology, From Earth's End: The Best of New Zealand Comics, and our re-release of the classic kids graphic novel, Terry Teo and the Gunrunners by Stephen Ballantyne & Bob Kerr.

Not My Day Job: James Davidson on his career as a Teacher, and a Cartoonist

In the lead up to next week's release of Moa, James Davidson talked to The Big Idea about balancing his career as Head of the Arts Faculty at Opunake High School (and currently acting Deputy Principal), with his growing career as a comics creator.

“Comics is what I do for myself and teaching is how I impact the community. If anything, I would love to be able to forge a better balance between my two passions. The reality is that young people are too valuable to have educators who are in it only halfway, so when it comes to time, my art will always come second.”

Earth's End at NZ Book Festival 2016!

This Saturday the Earth's End Publishing team will be selling at the NZ Book Festival 2016, a great community event designed to promote and celebrate independent writers and publishers. The event will be taking place at the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, 487 Dominion Road, Mt Eden, Auckland, from 10am - 4.30pm. Entry is FREE!

For Readers - Here's an opportunity to meet the writers behind the books. Chat with passionate Kiwi authors who’ve come from all over New Zealand. Browse through books that you may not find on mainstream bookstore shelves, and discover gems from a diverse range of genres – and authors! All books are available for purchase.

For Writers - Got a manuscript sitting in a drawer and don't know what to do next? Your next step is to come to the NZ Book Festival. You’ll get the opportunity to ask questions and get answers on how to publish your own e-book or print book. Let private New Zealand publishers share their knowledge with you. They’ll help you bring your dream of publishing to life.
